  9. 1stGuide is a program/accessory to view/play the following standard
  10. file formats in GEM windows on all Atari machines, all system
  11. configurations, in all screen resolutions and color depths
  12. (1 Bit Monochrome up to 32 Bit True-Color):
  13.  
  14.     .IMG    GEM-(X)-Image picture files, Level-1/2/3
  15.         (1 Bit Monochrome up to 12 Bit RGB Colormap)
  16.     .IFF    Interchange File Format: ILBM - Interleaved Bitmaps
  17.         (1 Bit Monochrome up to 12 Bit RGB Colormap)
  18.     .GEM    GEM-Metafiles (including bezier curves under
  19.         appropriate VDI, e.g. NVDI >= 2.12)
  20.     .RSC    GEM-Resource files
  21.         (simple up to 64 K and extended > 64 K)
  22.     .PNG    Portable Network Graphics, all 'flavors'
  23.         according to the current specification
  24.     .JPG
  25.     .JPE
  26.     .JPEG   Joint Photographic Experts Group - pictures:
  27.         JPEG/JFIF-Standard (usually 24 Bit color depth)

  32.         MPEG-1-System (Video+Audio interleaved)

  41. Furthermore, hypertext-like links can be defined between files in a
  42. simple manner, which provides the possibility to create large infor-
  43. mation systems to be used interactively with 1stGuide. See in the
  44. program description for details.

  46. Note: By pressing Control-A (or holding down the right mouse key by
  47. clicking in the Acc-Menu) you get a configuration dialog to set your
  48. preferences.
  49. Here is a short description of the "Image-Dithering" option:
  50. With "Niemals" (Never) dithering is 'normally' (see below) not used.
  51. At "Bedarf" (Need) images are only dithered if containing more colors
  52. than are available in the current screen resolution. Otherwise, the
  53. color palette must be changed by hand (Popup/Shortcuts ^E, ^S).
  54. If you select "Immer" (Always), images containing a color palette
  55. will always be dithered (except in High-/True-Color modes).
  56. Advantages:
  57.     - no need to change the hardware palette;
  58.     - multiple pictures are displayed in right colors
  59.       at the same time.
  60. Disadvantages:
  61.     - not optimal display (dithering to a fix palette);
  62.     - higher computing costs -> longer waiting time
  63.       at loading.
  64. Simply try this out! This option is not used in High-/True-Color
  65. modes and is only used for IMG/IFF-pictures, not for JPG.

  68.     Installation for Atari ST(E)/TT/Falcon etc.:
  69.     --------------------------------------------

  71. 1. Copy the file 1STGUIDE.ACC into your Boot-Directory. If you want
  72.    to print with 1stGuide, an appropriate version of GDOS must be
  73.    installed.
  74.  
  75. The following steps apply only for installing the full package:
  76.  
  77. 2. Create a new folder (e.g. "1STGUIDE") on your harddisk, and copy
  78.    or decompress the disk contents into that folder.
  79.  
  80. 3. Reboot the system, click in the Desk-Menu on the entry "1st Guide"
  81.    and choose the file "1STGUIDE.HLP" with the upcoming file-selector
  82.    in your installation directory. There you will get further
  83.    instructions.

  85. Additionaly you can insert the following line in your DESKTOP.INF or
  86. NEWDESK.INF file to avoid getting the alert "Show/Print/Cancel" by
  87. the desktop:

  93. If you insert the following line after this, you can start 1STGUIDE
  94. (and certain other, also inactive, accessories) immediately as a

  101. Alternatively, you can rename 1STGUIDE into .PRG, .APP, or .GTP for
  102. use as a program.

  108. The 1stGuide full package contains the following parts:
  109.  
  110.     - 1STGUIDE.ZIP, containing the program file 1STGUIDE.ACC,
  111.             this english textfile 1STGUIDE.ENG, and
  112.             the german description 1STGUIDE.GER;
  113.  
  114.     - GUIDHELP.ZIP, containing detailed program description
  115.             and TOS/GEM-System-Documentation in
  116.             hypertext form;
  117.  
  118.     - GUIDTOOL.ZIP, containing utility programs for use with
  119.             1stGuide, a printable description in TeX as
  120.             DVI-file, and 1stView including sources;
  121.  
  122.     - GUIDDOSE.ZIP, containing program versions for the PC-GEM.
  123.  
  124. Furthermore, the following packages are available:
  125.  
  126.     - JPEG_DSP: contains DSP-JPEG-Decode-Driver for the Falcon;
  127.  
  128.     - JPEG_GVS: contains the JPEG-Save-Module for GEM-View 3.x;
  129.  
  130.     - MPEGDSP.TTP: DSP-MPEG-Player-Demoprogram for the Falcon;
  131.  
  132.     - MPEG_SYS: contains a tool for MPEG-1-System-Layer-Streams;
  133.  
  134.     - XIMGTOOL: contains sources and tool für XIMG-Level-1/2/3.

  136. For distribution AT LEAST the archive 1STGUIDE.ZIP or it contents
  137. (1STGUIDE.ACC, 1STGUIDE.ENG, 1STGUIDE.GER) is necessary, other parts
  138. are OPTIONAL!
  139. The full package is available automatically after registration. If
  140. you are NOT able to deal with HD-disks, please note this at registra-
  141. tion. In this case some optional parts must be left. Normally I
  142. send HD-disks!

  145.     Registration:

  148. 1stGuide is SHAREWARE!! This means, that a registration by sending
  149. the shareware fee to the author is necessary, if you decide to use
  150. the program regularly, and if you are interested in further
  151. extensions and enhancements.
